Day One at Science School

Good Evening Parents,

At 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Yee called, she reported the following...

- They arrived there at 10:30 am.
- Once they got off the bus, students who did not have snow boots, jackets, gloves, and hats were offered one by the school. (Their borrowed boots have the size displayed on the front tip of their boots.) There are patches of snow all around.
- They brought their belongings up to their cabin then went to lunch.
- Lunch consisted of hamburgers and fries. The kids loved it, they said its the best food ever!
- There's another school up there, Discovery Science Magnet from Lancaster. They only brought 30 fifth grade students. They do not mix/ are not mixed with the Delevan Students.
- Their elevation is 8000 feet. Some of the students are feeling the altitude. Some have been experiencing mild headaches, nausea, and the teachers are a little "huffy and puffy" after about 20 minutes of hiking.
- The Naturalists have hiked with the students. They constantly mix our students amongst themselves so that everyone gets to work each other. All learning is outside. They will use the buildings if the weather gets too bad for outdoor learning. They are constantly working. They have journals to write on about their daily learning. They are to write about what they've seen, heard and experienced. They have homework every day and a project, a skit, to present on Thursday. They have been assigned to a group and each group has a theme for their skit. Mrs. Yee's group's theme is Ant Colony.
- The kids have been assigned to dinner tables. They take turns setting up the tables, they are called hoppers/runners.
- Dinner consisted of friend chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. No nuts and pork are ever served.
- There was a camp fire going on with the Naturalists as Mrs. Yee was talking to me.
- Our 6th Graders are VERY EXCITED and HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME! THEY'RE LOVING IT UP THERE!

Mrs. Yee will call me again around the same time tomorrow evening. I will post any news as they arise.

Have a good evening.
