hello parents I am ashley bernals mom.  i met with mrs yee and mrs andrews about the graduation
  they gave me your info so that we can start planning.  I am working with mr adams and mrs reddicks to get prices for canopies chairs cake and decorations.  we will have estimates by Friday to give to the teachers.  I am going to need about 15 volunteers including ud to help on the day of graduation Tuesday june 19 with decorating cleaning set up.  we need to be there by 6am.  please let me know if you can help with that

"Class of 2012" 6th Grade T-Shirt

Hello 6th Grade Parents/Guardians!

Mrs. Yee and Mrs. Andrews are wondering if any one knows someone who can make a "Class of 2012" t-shirt for the 6th graders. End of the Year 6th Grade Activities

6th Grade Portraits and Panorama Picture will be on April 12
-they will receive a leather bound, certificate and picture album, from the portrait company
-there's no required dress code but it would be great if they can wear something "nice"/their "Sunday Best"

March Madness Finale

March Madness' final game will be Thursday, March 29, at 10:30 am, on the upperyard. The two teams in the finale are Oklahoma Sooners and Stanford Cardinal. Come cheer them on, watch an awesome half-time show and participate in the Parent/Teacher vs. 6th Grade game.

Delevan Shirts Sale!!!

A newly designed Delevan Drive T-Shirt, Polo Shirt, Long Sleeve Tee-Shirt, Hooded Pull-Over Sweatshirt, and Hooded Zippered Sweater will be on sale starting Monday, March 5, 2012!!! Order yours right away, the sale will only last until March 16. Children and adult sizes will be available. Prices will vary. Fliers with more information will go home on Monday, March 5, 2012.

Shakey's Pizza Parlor Night Results

Good news! We made $199.06 from the fundraiser event on February 17, 2012 at Shakey's Pizza Parlor.

The money will be used for diminishing the balance due on the buses for the Blue Sky Meadow Outdoor Science School.

Day Four at Science School

Day four's breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs, potatoes, and biscuits.
For Lunch they had bagels and cream cheese, a fruit, and trail mix.
For dinner they had pizza, a salad bar, and cake.

Today was the "Big Hike". The Naturalists had the students lay down on the meadow, about 20 feet away from each other. They were to enjoy the surroundings, listen to sounds, and try to figure out what was making the sounds. They were asked to write a poem while in the meadow.

When they finished and were off hiking again, one group found fresh mountain lion tracks. The students got very excited and called every one else to come over to take a look.

Another group found a coyote skull with some flesh still on the mouth area. The Naturalists believe it had been killed by a mountain lion.

As they hiked along, they came to some steep and icy terrain. They had to climb over logs. Mr. Adams climbed up first to help his group get up to higher ground. When he finished helping the kids, he slipped and fell. When he fell his palm hit a rock and was cut. He was taken back to Big Bear and had received nine stitches on the cut hand. Mrs. Yee said he is doing fine and was just focused on helping the kids. -Thank you Mr. Adams!-

One group hiked and reached the 9000 feet elevation.

Mrs. Yee mentioned that yesterday, during the small hike, one group saw a bear in the distance and quickly, but quietly, walked away.

Mrs. Yee did not call until well past 8:00 p. m. today because they were busy with their skit presentations.

Tomorrow, after breakfast, there will be a short hike before the students pack up for home. They will be given a bagged/sacked lunch to take with them to the bus.

The bus should pick them up by 11 a.m. and should be back at Delevan by 2 p.m. .

Well, I guess this is all folks, it's been fun reporting.

Day Three at Science School

Breakfast consisted of french toast, turkey ham, and cantaloupe.

There was another small hike today.

-The students saw the school's chickens. There are 8 different types, they have two of each type.

-They studied a skull collection of different types of animals. They had to identify the animal by the skull's features.

-They had to identify different animal prints.

-They had a night hike. They studied the constellations.

-There was a part in the night hike where the kids had to hike 100 yards across the meadow to the Naturalist that was waiting for them at the end of the field. They could not use a flashlight, they had to use the moon light and their night vision.

-They experienced "Life Saver in the Dark". They each put a peppermint life saver in their mouth, and when they bit down and chewed it up, it sparked and flashed in their mouth. They were all in "oooh, aaah" about it as Mrs. Yee described it.

-Their homework tonight is animal and plant adaptation.

It was windy today but they were all bundled up.

A bagged lunch consisted of a turkey wrap, cheese sticks, oranges, and cookies. This of course, was sent with the kids on their hike.

The kids are having such an incredible time learning (learning through exploration and investigation and play). Our kids mentioned to the teachers that some of their friends, who are more shy than others, have been openly smiling and talking more. They noticed their friends (Jesaan, Sean and Shaun, just to name a few) seem very happy.

Yesterday was Sophia Villanueva's birthday; all of the kids sang a very heartfelt happy birthday to her.

Last night, Mrs. Yee and Mrs. Andrews snuck out of their bed and tip toed around the girl's rooms. They drew mustaches, unibrows, and a third eye on the girls' faces. Jordan woke up with a third eye :). The teachers got in trouble with the Naturalists - for being out of bed after "lights out". ;)

Tonight's dinner was a "Mexican Dinner". They had beef burritos, rice, beans, and churros.

The bus, to bring the students back home, should be at the camp by 11 a.m. on Friday. They should be back at Delevan by 2:00 p.m..

This is a "friendly" reminder to parents that we are still working on raising the registration fees for the children. Even though they are at Science School, the bill will be due. There are plenty more carwash tickets and the Shakey's Night is on the 17th!

Day Two at Science School continued

I thought I'd mention that Ms. Mariduena is now up at the camp and they are doing well with the number of chaperones present.

Their "Big Hike" will be on Thursday. The Naturalists make sure they dress warmly, as they did today.

Day Two at Science School

Day Two at Science School began with breakfast at 8 a.m.; hash browns, turkey sausages, scrambled eggs, and muffins were served.

All of the students are now acclimated to the elevation.

- 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. - "Small Hike" - Students were put into groups of 12, there were 8 groups in all. They went on an all day hike out in the meadow with their Naturalist. The hikes are filled with academic learning. During their hike, they would hike to a certain place, stop to observed their surroundings, listen to the day's lecture, journal their learning, and move on to the next point of interest. The other school's students are now mixed with our students.

-During the hike, two of the three main science themes were covered.

Life Science:
-Students were taught which plants were editable and their nutritional value, this they called "Eating in Nature". The students ate Juniper Berries and White Fur leaves, which are very fine needles. The Juniper Berries tasted bad but can give you lots of energy. The White Fur needles tasted like citrus fruits. Just half an inch of one needle can contain as much vitamin c as a whole orange. The water is super fresh and delicious. It's the best tasting water the teachers have ever had. They learned the difference between male and female pine cones.

They visited some caged animals. There was a grizzly bear, a mountain lion, a tiger, and a raccoon.

Earth Science
-Students were taught about different types of rocks. They searched, observed and scraped sedimentary and igneous rocks.

They played a lot of outdoor games.

There was a scavenger hunt in the day and at night.
-6 p.m.-7 p.m. Evening Scavenger Hunt- Only four groups at a time went on the hunt while the other four groups were in a dance. The groups switched once the first group returned. During the hunt they were given a list of things to observe and listen for. One of the things they had to do was howl like a coyote and answer back when they heard someone or something howling. They all had flashlights.

Lunch was packed and sent with the kids. They had sandwiches and chips.

There's usually at least 45 minutes to one hour of cabin time daily. Their cabin time today was from 4 p.m.-5 p.m.. During this time they may work on their group project or rest.

- 5 p.m-6 p.m. -Dinner consisted of spaghetti, a salad bar, long cheesy garlic bread, and ice cream. The school is very organized in recycling and using left over food for compost. They have live chickens and uses the student's left over foods to feed to the chickens.

-8 m.p.-9 p.m. The kids shower before going to bed. The girls have the cabins with the indoor shower. The boys have to go outdoor for the showers. Lights out is at 9:30 p.m..

Chaperone Needed

Good Afternoon Parents,

I spoke with Mrs. Andrews earlier today. She reported that they all arrived at science school safely, around 10:30 am. She also said that they can really use one more female chaperone. If anyone is able to go as soon as tomorrow morning, they would greatly appreciate it. One 6th grade parent, Janina Mariduena, will be driving up tomorrow and is willing to carpool. If you are able to go, please email Ms. Velasquez at pdv0813@lausd.net. She will give you more information and will get in touch with Ms. Mariduena.

Science School Meeting Notes

These are the topics that were covered during the Science School meeting.

"What to Pack" checklist
- Another copy will be sent home or just look in the blog, Maria Rivera will scan and post it by Friday.
- Pay close attention to not sending new shoes and clothes. New shoes may cause blisters or may be
uncomfortable. New clothes may be uncomfortable or restrict your child from required activities.

Academics - It's PRICELESS!
- Your child will be attending Science School, not a camp without academic content. All science standards in Life, Physical, and Earth Science will be covered during the five days of complete hands-on activities. This is an invaluable opportunity for our children to experience. This event will undoubtedly assist them when they take the Science component in their 7th Grade CST (California State Test). This hands-on experience benefits all types of learners and is an opportunity that we can not realistically offer within the four walls of Delevan. This is an experience we can offer our children that goes beyond book, paper, and pencil learning. This will peak, scaffold and cement their interest in science. They will surely remember this experience for many years to come.

Dates
- Our projected departure date is Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, from Delevan.
- The projected meeting/check-in time is 6 am so that we can check that we have everything that is needed
before leaving.
- Projected return date is Friday, February 3, 2012, by 2:09 pm.
- Parents(s) will be contacted should the return date be altered due to weather.
***Pack and send lunch with water, for your child to eat in the bus on departure day.***

Supervision/Chaperones
- 1 adult male per 8 male students
- 1 adult female per 9 female students
- As of today, we are assigned to the newer cabins with indoor plumbing, and Delevan is the only school scheduled to be at the site. Should another school attend the same week we are there, the girls will be assigned to be in the cabins with indoor plumbing.
- Chaperones: Mr. Adams, Mr. Reddics, Mrs. Yoro,and Ms. Novak please turn in your clearance forms to Ms. Velasquez a.s.a.p.
- Ms. Velasquez needs your TB, finger printing, and other forms needed for supervision.

FINANCIAL REPORT
- We have $5,123. WE NEED $16,000 more!!!
- We want to have this money and pay our bill as soon as possible.
- We paid the down payment of $20 per child (x 68 students) in December.
- The balance is due the first week of June but we want to pay off the bill and not wait because we have
culmination activities/costs to take care of when we get back from Science School.
- If you can donate the cost, $310, of the trip for your child, it would help greatly.
- Please talk to your child's teacher about options/ideas on how to meet the cost of the trip for your child.
One suggestion brought up was saving/putting aside about $50 a month.
Another idea was, buy 21 car wash tickets now and sell them at your convenience.
- Only 7 out of 68 students have fully met their trip cost.
- We raised about $1,200 from the basket sales (comprised of donated items) and other booths from the
Harvest Festival.
- We raised about $350 from one Yard Sale, $185 from Shakey's Night, and $21 from Chuck E. Cheese Night.
- We have not added the recycling and used ink cartridges money yet.
- The fundraising efforts have ceased, we need to pick it up again and do more.

Up-Dates & Reminders

Hello Everyone!

I just want to summarize the many fund raising efforts happening this month and encourage you and the students to keep it up!

1. continue to bring in Recyclable Items
2. continue selling Lexus of Glendale Carwash coupons
3. Smencils sale is Thursday & Friday, Dec. 1 & 2, before & after school in front of the auditorium
4. It's not too late to order clothes from CAbi via Mrs. Westbrook. I bought a jacket, a pair of jeans and a blouse, and I love them! They fit really well and are very comfortable. Other parents here at Delevan have purchased them and are very satisfied as well. Mrs. Westbrook donated half of her profit.

Up-Date on the Garage Sale

Thank you to all who donated items and worked on the garage sale. A big thank you to Mrs. Vargas for hosting it. I was informed that it generated over $350.00.
